Hi,
We have weighed all the Pandas which apt83 has listed and with the exception of 1987 and 1992 they all weigh around 31.1 to 31.2 grams being an ounce of Silver.

The majority fake pandas in the market have the correct weight, except those made pre-2006 silver plated copper coins.

The following link is for fake 2013 1 oz silver panda. The weight of this fake panda with double sealed package is about 37.5 gm. This weight is about the same as double sealed earlier geniune pandas.

Hi poconopenn,

It's hard to imagine that the fakes will weigh the same AND also the measurements fall within tolerance - physically, that's just impossible.  Chances are that the fakes will measure thicker, if the diameter is not wider.

It is possible if the forgers used the same material, i.e., 99.9% silver blanks.  However, that's a pretty big upfront investment, so they'll need to go after the rare silver panda to justify the cost.  I suppose they can always melt down the forgery and try another if they didn't succeed the first time.

SANDAC,

That's exactly my point. When did you ever hear the forgeries are made of pure silver/gold??

Many fake pandas are made with pure silver. See the following link.

http://finance.hebnews.cn/news/2013-01/16/content_3049452.htm

For fake silver earlier pandas, the profit is more than 200%. It is also possible to make metal alloy with the same density as silver.
