1996 1oz 15th Anniversary Gold Panda Date Varieties
« on: December 19, 2012, 07:15:42 PM »
I just saw one of the variations of the 1996 15th anniversary 1oz gold panda on ebay - for sale by Jason (link below). Does anyone know what the mintage figures are on either one of the variations and which one is more rare? Also, does anyone know if these are also found in the 1/4 and 1/10 15th anniversary size?

My sample size for the 1oz is only 9.  There are 4 off-center and 5 centered.  For the 1/4 oz, the photo are too fuzzy, but there appeared to be different varieties.  1/10oz looked all the same to me, but that's because of the poor photo.

Besides being Off-centered, the dates are also High or Low, which might be easier to see at a glance.
Also interesting: the height of the lettering underneath the date is different, such that the Low Date has the lettering high in the ring, and the High Date has the lettering Low in the ring.

Also, I have looked a lot and not yet found any 1/4s with varietion, but there is an oddity: the lettering in the ring is not even: it is high on one side and low in the other. Weird.

Thank you for the additional info. I guess we will find out with time which variety is more valuable/lower minted. This will give collectors another variation to collect.

The coin Jason is selling seems like a good deal in PCGS MS69 Secure Plus.

I always wondered why these are typically graded MS and not PF...
In my opinion, they look strikingly different than the BU versions for the year.

IMO, sorta in between BS and Proof- different, better than BS but still not the highest quality strike of a proof.

I am very interested in finding out the story, if it is to be ever uncovered, on why these special coins were treated rather sloppily in their manufacturing-

Why the obvious non-centered dates in about half ? (based on my research so far, pop not overwhelmingly in favor of either Centered or Non-Centered Dates).

And what could possibly explain the apparent sloppy asymmetric placement of the lettering in the ring of the 1/4 oz?
Higher on the left and dropping lower on the right?
