I just received a copy of Mr. Ge's book, which is a mixed blessing.  The positive is that there are images of a wide range of unusual and beautiful modern China coins.  Coins that you don't often see.  The negative is that I'm now intrigued by a number of coins that are probably outside of my price range...but there are few that might be accessible and that I'd like to know a bit more about.

One is the 1997 Chinese Modern Chinese Famous Painting Series - Gold Penguin Coin.  I believe it is a 100 Yuan denomination and 1/2 oz of gold.  Does anyone know where one of these is for sale or trade?   The Birdman is doing a little dreaming...Thanks.

Sometimes dreams come true, you know...

Awesome coin. A 69 was sold for $3800 on Zhaoonline last August, a 68 was sold for $1790 earlier this month.

Thanks for sharing that info, Gilmore.  That gives me a starting point in my research.  My follow-up question (for anyone) is does that represent true current market value?  Was that a fixed price or auction result?  After the shill bidding I've observed on US eBay over the past few months, I am now skeptical of all auction results (sad to say).  Moreover, I know almost nothing about the reputation of Zhaoonline.

It seems that, of the three gold coins associated with the Chinese Modern Chinese Famous Painting Series, the 1997 has the highest mintage (planned?).

http://modernchinacoins.com/MODERN_CHINESE_FAMOUS_PAINTING_SERIES.html

The site above states it at 2800, while Mr. Ge's book states it at 2300.  The 1994 gold magpie and the 1995 gold eagle have about half as many (planned mintage?).  As always, the current surviving population is another issue.

Does anyone know of a website or resource with additional information on this series?  Or any reputable recent sales information?  Thanks.

Birdman,
Zhaoonline is a very reputable auction house in China and its auction results reflect the market price in China. Most of the times you can get there coins at much cheaper prices than what dealers would offer. Prices of some coins may be different in Europe and the US.

The prices I posted earlier are from auctions, not fixed price sales. See the link below for auction results of all the coins from this series. All are in RMB.

Thanks, Straightssettlementshop.  May I ask when and where were these three sales?

Wow, and to think that that the spot price of 1/2 ounce of gold was less than $200 in 1994.  I wonder what that Magpie initially sold for?
