Chinese Vault Protector medals
« on: November 22, 2011, 10:51:10 PM »
I have really started liking the Vault Protector medals lately.  And it looks like they were released for several years.  Does anybody collect these and can you share a little info on them.  I have a few questions that I hope can be answered but any info is appreciated.
What years were they released?   What sizes were they released in, gold and silver?
What is considered the KEY Date?
Are these very rare or quite common?
Do they have an cultural significance to the Chinese People?  If so What is it?
And the question that prompted this post....I have noticed a bunch of 1987 5oz Silver Vault Protectors on eBay right now.  The stated mintage is 999, can this be right there is about a dozen for sale right now on eBay?
Thanks for the info

The Vault Protectors have been one of my favorite. Simple. Elegant. The thing I like about them is they are all remakes of much earlier Chinese cultural artifacts.   They range from 1/10 gold with Horse and cutout, to 1 ounce gold (my favorite) to 15 oz gold and kilo, and one, five, fifteen oz and kilo Silver.
I like the clean looks of the 5 oz 1987 and 1 oz 1990 best.  The big ones look great on a desk!  I aim for a gold kilo some day....
There is some confusion, some sources give the 5 oz mintage as 999, others 2000.  The 15 oz was 999 and they may have slipped and said the 5 oz was too, but there have been so many available, like the God of Wealth, I suspect both a cache being released as well as the larger mintage number.

1982 10 oz gold
1985 1/10 gold
1987 5 oz silver
1990 gold 1 oz
1990 gold  15 oz
1990 Silver 1 oz
1990 silver 15 oz
1998 silver 1 oz
1998 gold 1/10
1998 gold kilo
1998 silver kilo
1999/1990?   1/10 gold Horse
