Hello to all Chinese Coin Forum readers who will attend the 2019 Beijing International Coin Exposition (November 15-17) at the China National Convention Center in Beijing.

You can find me at the Shenyang Mint exhibit where I will be part of the Mint’s official presentation. Book sales on the first day of BICE were 62. The show price is 158 RMB. I will add some comments after Saturday's ( tomorrow's) session as that is considered the day the public attends most strongly. The book's inventory is stored in Beijing so books can be delivered to the show on fairly short notice. Neither the Mint, nor I, knew really what to expect. Everyone is trying to figure out this market. This is also the first instance of a private party participating in a government display here within memory, maybe ever for all I know, so the effect of that on sales was an unknown.

The Shenyang Mint and its amazing staff have been great, including its leader who came over to take a photo with me. I also really appreciated the conversations and camaraderie of friends who work at other Mints, of NGC and of numismatic friends from China, Macao, the USA, Germany... there is cetainly a part of me that can't believe this is real.

It is a silver-plated bimetallic medal. Not sure of the mintage, but they were all struck on the show floor yesterday.

At the end of the day 85 Panda books were sold at BICE.

A couple of notes on the Shenyang Mint BICE panda medals . There are two versions: one has a silver plated ring surrounding a brass core. These were sold for 60 RMB (around $9 USD). This was the gift with the book. There is also a second version with a solid silver core surrounded by a brass (or gilt - I have to clarify that) ring. These were sold for 120 RMB.

Finally, the fun factor at this show was very high for everyone that I spoke to.

If a person attends the coin show in Kowloon in December, how will he or she identify thd 2019 Bice panda medal with the silver core and gilt ring?  Is the metal content written on the surface of the medal or on the edge?  Is the date written on the obverse or reverse?

Is this similar to the 2017 BICE show in which the mint issued an 8 gram silver medal and an 8 gram Cu/Ni medal?  If I remember correctly, there was no indication on the silver medal as to its metal content and you told me the content so that I could make the purchase.

For one, book sales, in general, were slow at BICE, according to my publisher. Second, the same book was sold last year at BICE (by China Financial Publishing, not the Shenyang Mint), so it is not a new item. Third, I am an oddity as a foreign numismatic author in China. People come by, look at the book and try to absorb that. This is a cultural product and there are many factors in sales that are hard to imagine if you aren't part of the flow there. I am very fortunate to have friends and colleagues who support my effort, but this is not a mainstream book in any and every way.

Contrary to your conclusion, there was a beautiful pin and necklace with a gold panda coin embedded in it: those both sold out. Even so, there is still a lot of room for growth in both collectors and prices of panda coins. That is one of the reasons people collect them.
